The new constitution divides Kenya into 47 counties for administrative purposes. Each county has a county commissioner whose main job is to ensure proper coordination of all national government activities at the county level. So, who are the county commissioners in Kenya?

1. Mohamed Nur Hassan - Mombasa County

Mohamed Nur Hassan was born and raised in Elwak, Mandera County. He holds a bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Nairobi. Nur also earned a master's degree from Masinde Muliro University. He joined the provincial administration in 1998.

2. Hiram Kahiro - Kwale County

Hiram Kahiro is a Kenyan administrator and the current county commissioner of Kwale County. He previously worked at The Ministry of Interior and National Administration Headquarters at Harambee House.

3. Josephat Biwott - Kilifi County

Josephat Biwott is one of the few deputy county commissioners recently promoted by Kithure Kindiki, CS of Interior and Administration of National Government. Biwott is a former deputy county commissioner of Lunga-Lunga. He has a lot of experience in public administration circles.

4. David Koskei - Tana River County

David Koskei's tenure as county commissioner of Tana River County officially began on 1 February 2024. He is the immediate former Masinga deputy county commissioner,

Until his demise on 21 March 2024, Louis Kipng'etich Rono was the Lamu County Commissioner. He had been in service for close to three decades. He was laid to rest at his home in Bureti, Kericho county, on 5 April 2024.

6. Josephine Onunga - Taita Taveta County

Josephine Onunga has served as the county commissioner of Taita Taveta County since early 2023. She was previously stationed at the headquarters of The Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

7. Benson Leparmorijo - Kisumu County

Benson Leparmorijo is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi. He also holds a master's degree in business administration from Mount Kenya University. He is the immediate former personal assistant for the Central regional commissioner.

8. Susan Waweru - Siaya County

Susan Waweru graduated with a bachelor's degree in government and public administration from Moi University in 1994. She has robust skills in public speaking, strategic planning and customer service. She is the immediate former county commissioner of Nairobi.

9. Abdirisack Jaldesa - Nyandarua County

Abdirisack Jaldesa was among the county commissioners reshuffled in the latest changes made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki. He was transferred from Mombasa to Nyandarua.

10. Erastus Mbui - Laikipia

Erastus Mbui, the former county commissioner of Kitui, was transferred to Laikipia County in January 2024. Mbui was one of the administrators who were accused of circulating hate leaflets in Rift Valley by the then UDA presidential candidate, William Ruto, during the 2022 polls.

11. Joshua Nkanatha - Murang’a

Joshua Nkanatha has been the county commissioner of Murang'a since January 2024. He was initially stationed in Kiambu County.

12. Jacob Ouma - Meru

Jacob is an alumnus of the Moi University. He earned a bachelor of arts in public administration at the institution. He also holds a master's degree in project planning and management from the University of Nairobi.

Jacob became assistant county commissioner in Kitui County in 2010. Before then, he was the principal of Matuu High School between 1999 and 2003. He also served as a project manager at Mully Children's Family Homes from 1994 to 1999.

13. Henry Wafula - Makueni

Henry Wafula left Samburu to take over the Makueni County Commissioner post in January 2024. Before being posted to Samburu County, he was the county commissioner of Baringo.

14. Kipchumba Rutto - Kitui

Kipchumba Rutto is among the county commissioners recently transferred from their previous working stations. He was moved from Busia to Kitui County.

15. Onesmus Kyatha - Samburu

Onesmus Kyatha is the current county commissioner of Samburu. He had initially been stationed in Nyamira. He has also served in Mandera and Mombasa, among other counties.

16. Karuku Ngumo - Wajir

Karuku Ngumo has been the county commissioner of Wajir since March 2023. Before then, he was the county commissioner of Murang'a.

Amos Mariba is the county commissioner of Mandera. He was among the county commissioners ordered to remain at their current stations in the recent national administration changes in January 2024.

18. Nobert Komora - Marsabit

Nobert Komora was transferred to Marsabit from Tharaka Nithi during the national Administration changes in March 2023. He was posted to Tharaka Nithi in 2022.

19. Wesley Koech - Tharaka Nithi

Wesley Koech was deployed to Tharaka Nithi in March 2023 to replace Nobert Komora. Before then, he was the deputy county commissioner of Loitoktok.

20. Geoffrey Omoding - Isiolo

Geoffrey Omoding, who served as the county commissioner of Nandi County for over 11 months, was moved to Isiolo in 2021.

21. Pius Murugu Mugamb - Nyeri

Pius Murugu was among the deputy county commissioners promoted to county commissioners during national administration changes in March 2023. He has previously served as a coordinator of national government functions at the South Sudan National Platform for Peace and Reconciliation Secretariat.

He also served as a district commissioner from 2009 to 2012. Pius Murugu is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi. He holds a master's degree in diplomacy and international relations.

22. Tobiko Naiyoma - Kirinyaga

Tobiko Naiyoma was promoted to Kirinyaga County commissioner in March 2023. He has previously served as Nyandarua North deputy county.

23. Gideon Oyagi - Trans-Nzoia

Gideon Oyagi was moved to Trans-Nzoia County in March 2023. Previously, he was the county commissioner of Kwale.

24. Julius Kavita - Turkana

Julius Kavita was recently promoted to Turkana County Commissioner. He is the immediate deputy county commissioner of Kirinyaga Central.

25. Khalif Abdillahi - West Pokot

Khalif Abdillahi is among the deputy county commissioners who were promoted to county commissioners in the latest reorganisation at the Ministry of Interior. He was the deputy county commissioner of Nakuru West before moving to West Pokot.

Duncan Darusi took over from Joshua Nkanatha as the new county commissioner of Kiambu. Before then, he was the deputy county commissioner of Narok West.

27. David Wanyonyi - Nairobi

David Wanyonyi took over Nairobi County from Susan Waweru. He was the deputy county commissioner of Mathira East.

28. Moses Lilan - Homa Bay County

Moses Lilan is the current Homa Bay County Commissioner. The Kenyan administrator has been vocal against hate speech, gender-based violence, and corruption.

29. David Gitonga - Migori County

David Gitonga has been the Migori County Commissioner since last year. He is an astute administrator known for his exemplary skills in enforcing laws. The administrator recently warned drug traffickers within Migori County of serious repercussions if arrested.

Joseph Kibet is one of the lucky deputy county commissioners recently promoted to county commissioner by Kithure Kindiki. Kibet is the immediate former deputy county commissioner of Kisumu Town East.

31. John Cheruiyot - Nyamira County

John Cheruiyot was previously attached to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, head office at Harambee House, before his recent elevation as Nyamira County Commissioner. He has been at the helm of Nyamira County for less than three months.

32. Felix Watakila - Vihiga County

Felix Watakila is the Vihiga County Commissioner. He is an experienced administrator who has served as Kuresoi North Deputy County Commissioner and Kajiado County Commissioner.

Gideon Oyagi has been the Trans-Nzoia County Commissioner since early 2023. The administrator was transferred from Kwale County, where he also served in the same capacity.

33. Thomas Sankei – Bungoma County

Thomas Sankei was posted to Bungoma County by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration on 7 March 2023. He served as the county commissioner of Tana River before moving to Bungoma.

34. Michael Mwangi Meru – Kakamega County

Michael Mwangi Meru took over as the Kakamega County Commissioner in early 2024. He has a wealth of experience in public administration and has worked in Narok, Migori and Kwale counties as a county commissioner.

35. Mwachaunga Chaunga - Busia County

The county commissioner of Busia County is Mwachaunga Chaunga. Mwachaunga has an illustrious career in the national administration sector, serving as Isiolo and Turkana West Deputy County Commissioner.

36. Jack Obuo – Embu County

Jack Obuo is currently in charge of Embu County. He previously served as deputy county commissioner and county commissioner of Rachuonyo East Sub County and Kiambu County, respectively.

37. Josephine Ouko - Machakos County

Josephine Ouko is one of the few women serving as county commissioner in Kenya. She is the county commission of Machakos County. Ouko has previously served as the county commissioner of Kisumu and Busia. She has also served as the deputy commissioner of Kisumu East.

38. Reuben Lotiatia – Narok County

Reuben is the immediate former deputy county commissioner of Mt. Elgon Sub County. He has been county commissioner of Narok County for less than three months.

39. James Taari Rwaria – Kajiado County

James Taari Rwaria replaced Jude Wesonga as the Kajiado County Commissioner following the 2024 reshuffle of county commissioners countrywide. Taari is the immediate deputy commissioner of the Kajia North District.

40. John Korir - Elgeyo-Marakwet County

Korir has a master's degree in social development and management from Maseno University. He holds a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Kenyatta University. The Kenyan administrator has been at the helm of Elgeyo Marakwet County since 2022.

41. Stephen Kutwa – Baringo County

Stephen Kutwa was promoted from deputy county commissioner and moved to Baringo County as county commissioner on 7 March 2023. He took over from Abdirisack Jaldesa.

42. Gilbert Kitiyo – Kericho County

Gilbert Kitiyo is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is an experienced administrator, currently managing Kericho County. He has served as county commissioner in various counties, including Nakuru, Vihiga, and Mombasa.

43. Ahmed Omar – Bomet County

Dr. Ahmed Omar is overseeing Bomet County at the moment. The popular administrator has served in the same position in Elgeyo Marakwet County and Narok County.

44. Dr. Eddyson Nyale - Uasin-Gishu County

Uasin-Gishu County is under the jurisdiction of Dr. Eddyson Nyale. Eddyson has been Uasin-Gishu County's boss since August 2022.

45. Loyford Kibaara – Nakuru County

Kibaara was redeployed to Nakuru County from Taita Taveta on 7 March 2023, replacing Gilbert Kitiyo, who moved to Vihiga County.

46. Caroline Nzwili - Nandi County

Caroline Nzwili is among the few Kenyan women working as county commissioners. She has served as Nandi County Commissioner since her promotion in March 2023. Nzwili was previously the deputy county commissioner of Kandara.

47. Mohamed Ramadhani Mwabudzo – Garissa

Mohamed Ramadhani was promoted to county commissioner in January 2024. Previously, he was the deputy county commissioner of Trans Mara West.
